As you read the story “Night” and explore what the Holocaust was keep a log of important characters as they are discussed in the text. Identify as much as you can about the person i.e. who they are, their role in the story, their relation to Elie, their age, occupation, outlook, etc.
Character Analysis are due Thursday, April 17th - NO LATE WORK FOR "NIGHT" WILL BE ACCEPTED OVER OR AFTER SPRING BREAK!
CHARACTERS:
1. Elie - 12 year old Jewish boy from Sighet. Started out having very strong faith, but later loses his faith while he suffers in three different concentration camps.
2. Elie’s father -from Sighet. A respected elder in the town who is often sought for advice. He is a store owner with four children and a wife. He's fifty.
3. Franek-The foremen of Elie's depot. He wants Elie's crown.
4. Gestapo-local police officers
5. Idek-foreman at the depot. He's beats up Elie and his father.
6. Juliek-a young violin player who is killed for playing Beethoven, a German composer.
7. Kapos-prisoners who looked over the other prisoners and gave them orders.
8. Madame Schachter- Jewish woman who's mad because she's been separated from her husband and two sons. She's the first one to see the flames.
9. Moshe the Beadle-Jewish man who was Elie's mentor. He was seen as the town's clown.
10. Meir Katz- Elie's father's friend who saved Elie from strangulation.
11. Dr. Mengele-Concentration camp doctor. He treats the prisoners like animals and sees it as a game.
12. Rabbi Elahou (and son)-Jewish prisoner who's son abandoned him. Elie hopes that he will never turn out like his son.
13. SS Officers- German soldiers at the concentration camps.
14. Stein- relative of Elie's family. He brings Elie food and Elie gives him hope.
15. The dentist-A Czech-Jew who allows Elie to keep his gold tooth.
16. The French Girl-a young French girl who works in the depot with Elie. She advises Elie to hold his anger in and shares the secret that she's Jewish.
17. Zalman- One of Elie's fellow prisoners. He was trampled to death by the other prisoners on their way to Gleiwitz.
18. Tzipora-Elie's little sister
19. Tibi and Yossi- Czech brothers who lost their parents. They are attached to each other by souls.
20. Akiba the Drumer-A person at the camp. He wants to keep hope and faith alive. He is the most optimistic.
