Elie Wiesel Biography
Eliezer Wiesel, a Jewish writer, was born on September 30, 1928 in Sighet, Transylvania (present day Romania). He is a professor at Boston University and political activist. He is most know for his memoir "Night", written about his life as a persecuted Jew who survived the Holocaust. From a young age, Wiesel had shown he was deeply spiritual and would not give up his faith, not even for the Holocaust. During World War II, he and his family were taken to concentration camps. Unfortunately, some of his family perished, but luckily he and two of his sisters managed to survive. After the war, Wiesel studied in Paris, France and became a journalist. Once Wiesel began to study to become a journalist, he met with Francois Mauriac who encouraged him to write his famous memoir.
Because of Wiesel memoir, we have a first hand account of what really happened inside of the concentration camps. Wiesel inspired many to share their experiences andencouraged people to speak their minds. Wiesel opened up with Oprah about his experience in the infamous Auschwitz camp and explained that he still felt the spirits of the people who had passed. Today Wiesel became a professor at the University of Boston, public speaker, and an activist. He promoted peace and equality among humans and expressed that many injustices still occur to this day.
Wiesel had been seen a role model all over the world. He has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Nobel Peace Prize. He has served as a visiting scholar in Yale. He's been the chairman of the Holocaust Memorial Council and has founded the Elie Wiesel Foundation with his wife.
